Arts and Media
Library Media Center
The Charles Barrett Library Media Center supports the instructional needs of our students by providing an environment which encourages students to become life-long learners and effective users of information, ideas and technology.
The library media specialist works in collaboration with teachers and staff members to design and implement units of instruction that promote student mastery of key research and informational technology skills within the context of other areas of the curriculum.
The library collection includes books, videos, magazines, newspapers, and computer access to Charles Barrett’s network and the Internet. Students are encouraged to read for pleasure and information through regular book check out.
Band and Orchestra
Band and orchestra instruction begins in the 4th and 5th grades. At the start of 4th grade, students are introduced to all of the available instruments before they select their top three choices. Students can try out some of their top choices before making a final selection. Students may choose from the following:
Orchestra: violin, viola, cello, bass
Band: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn
Percussion is open to 5th graders only, due to scheduling limitations.
Students perform in two school concerts a year: 5th graders perform in December and May, and 4th graders perform in March and May. 5th graders have other opportunities to perform outside of school including All-City Band, All-City Orchestra, Solo and Ensemble Festival, Fifth Grade Fiddle Fest, and the NOVA Band Children's Concert.
If a younger student already studies an instrument outside of school, they may be able to participate with the 4th or 5th graders. Parents may contact Ms. Flynn with questions: erin.flynn-pace@acps.k12.va.us.
